From the beginning of City Hills Church, we have made it a priority to seek God first in prayer. We do this collectively as a church in January and August through 21 Days of Prayer. These two months are intentional, as they begin new seasons of the year. Together, we faithfully seek God first, trusting in His power alone to create lasting impact in our lives, our church and our world.

FASTING RESOURCES
At City Hills, we encourage fasting for 21 days each year in the month of January. However, you may also choose to fast at other times during the year for your own spiritual development. It’s very typical to fast a single meal, a whole day, or three days or more. The timing of your fast is not as important as the strength of your focus on Him as you fast.
The goal of fasting is to draw nearer to God. Biblical fasting always has to do with eliminating distractions for a spiritual purpose; it hits the reset button of our soul and renews us from the inside out. It also enables us to celebrate the goodness and mercy of God and prepares our hearts for all the good things God desires to bring into our lives. Remember, your personal fast should present a level of challenge, but it is very important to know your body, your options, and, most importantly, to seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do.
Scripture References:
Matthew 6:16-18 Matthew 9:14-15 Luke 18:9-14 Acts 27:33-37 Nehemiah 9:1-3
HOW TO GET STARTED ON YOUR FAST
Having a successful fast starts with the right preparation. It is important to choose ahead of time what type of fast, or what combination you will pursue. Not only will this help with making the necessary preparations to implement your plan, but as you commit to a specific fast ahead of time and know how you’re going to do it, you will position yourself to finish strong.
Here are a few Easy Steps to Get Started:
1) Set Your Objective
Begin by deciding why you are fasting. Is it for spiritual renewal, for healing, for wisdom in a particular area, or the resolution of a specific issue? Pick the top 1-3 prayer requests or things you would like to seek God on. Don’t overwhelm yourself and make a laundry list of items. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead in deciding and clarifying your goals for fasting.
2) Choose Your Plan
We are all at different places in our walk with God. Likewise our jobs, daily schedules, and health conditions are all different and place various levels of demand on our energy. So most importantly, whether you’ve fasted before, or this will be your first time, prayerfully consider what your fast will look like. Your personal fast should have a high level of challenge to it, but it’s very important to know your own body, know your options, and most importantly, seek God in prayer and follow what the Holy Spirit leads you to do. Remember, the goal of fasting is not just to do without food. The goal is draw nearer to God.
3) Choose Your Fasting Schedule
You may choose to fast all or several days of the 21 days, such as, 3 or 4 days a week or specifically on Sundays and Wednesdays. Maybe you will do that, and end with 3 to 7 consecutive days at the end. This is your personal decision, and again should be prayerfully considered as it applies to your circumstances. Just plan ahead.
4) Begin and Break the Fast Well
Depending on the type of fast you choose, it is very important to prepare your body ahead of time before beginning the fast. Take a week or so to transition into your fast; otherwise, you could get sick. For example, if you would like to go on fruits and vegetables or juice fast, start eliminating meat, white grains, and refined sugars from your diet the week before. Also start to cut back quite a bit on dairy products and some of your caffeine intake.
This same principle applies to breaking your fast. When your fast is over, add foods back very gradually. Your body will be so cleansed and detoxified. You will most likely get sick if you add too much rich foods, etc. all at once.
There are also several websites and books that offer additional resources for spiritual growth, recipes and nutritional information to help you along the way. Here are a few that we recommend.

Important Note: Fasting requires reasonable precautions. If you have any health concerns, please consult your physician prior to beginning your fast, especially if you are taking medications, have a chronic condition or are pregnant or nursing a baby.
COMPLETE FAST
This fast calls for drinking only liquids, typically water with light juices as an option.
SELECTIVE FAST
This type of fast involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sweets, or bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.
PARTIAL FAST
This fast is sometimes called the Jewish Fast and involves abstaining from eating any type of food in the morning and afternoon. This can either correlate to specific times of the day, such as 6:00 am to 3:00 pm, or from sunup to sundown.
SOUL FAST
This fast is common for those who do not have much experience fasting food, who have health issues that prevent them from fasting food, or who wish to refocus certain areas of their life that are out of balance. For instance, someone might select to abstain from using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast, and then choose to carefully bring that element back into their life in an orderly fashion at the conclusion of the fast.

1⁄3 cup olive oil
Cook quinoa and water in a covered saucepan over medium for about 12-15 minutes. (Cook just as you would rice and follow the directions on whichever quinoa box or bag you choose to use.) Allow quinoa to cool.
While quinoa is cooking, drain black beans in a strainer and give them a quick rinse under the faucet. Shake dry and put into a large bowl. Pat them with a paper towel to dry them out further if they are still really wet.
Add thawed corn, finely chopped bell peppers, and chopped cilantro (about a handful or desired amount) to bowl. Again, pat dry with a paper towel if everything is too damp.
In a second bowl whisk together dressing ingredients. Pour onto quinoa and toss. I always like to taste and add more salt/pepper and lime juice. Enjoy!

Place veggies onto a bed of chopped leaf lettuce and top with fresh salsa of your choice. Serve immediately and enjoy!
Main Dishes
Veggie Spaghetti
2 large (32 oz.) cans crushed tomatoes (no sugar added)
4 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
4 cloves fresh garlic (chopped)
1 cup chopped onions
1 package mushrooms
1 green pepper
2-3 zucchini
2-3 yellow squash
1 spaghetti squash
Cut spaghetti squash in half length-wise. Place flat side up on a cookie sheet, sprinkle with salt and pepper and roast at 350 degrees for about 30-45 minutes (depending on the size of the squash.)
In a large pan, sauté the chopped garlic and onions in the olive oil until tender. Add the cans of crushed tomatoes. Next, chop the green pepper, zucchini and squash to desired size and add, along with the mushrooms, into the sauce.
Let sauce simmer until all of the veggies are cooked thoroughly. Remove spaghetti squash from the oven. To ensure it is fully cooked make sure you can shred the squash with a fork. Scoop out the seeds and finish shredding the squash with a fork (which looks like spaghetti.) Pour the sauce over the spaghetti squash and enjoy.
Healthy Black Bean Burgers
1 (26.5 oz.) can of black beans, rinsed well and drained
1/4 red onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 red pepper, chopped small

1/2 tsp. cumin
1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper (add more or less, as desired)
1/2 cup cooked brown rice
Vegan mayonnaise (for binding, if needed)
2 Tbsp. coconut oil
Rinse and drain black beans and then mash with a fork. You’ll want the majority of the beans broken up completely. Add all other ingredients except Coconut Oil and mix well. If the mixture isn’t moldable, add a large teaspoon of vegan mayo just so it binds all the ingredients together.
Form the mix into individual patties. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or wax paper and refrigerate for 15 minutes (or up to an hour.) On medium heat, place 2 tablespoons coconut oil in pan. Add the patties (they can touch, but not overlay.) Sauté for about 3-5 minutes per side until crisp and browned. Work in batches. Serve immediately.

Transfer bean mixture to a bowl. Stir black beans and 1/4 cup tomatoes into bean mixture.
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Place a tortilla in the hot oil. Spread about 1/4 cup filling onto the tortilla.
Place another tortilla on top of the filling; cook until filling is warmed, about 10 minutes.
Spray the top tortilla with cooking spray and flip quesadilla to cook the second side until lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining tortillas and filling.

1 1/2 cloves garlic, crushed
2 tsp. chopped fresh ginger root, divided

1/2 cup halved green beans
2 Tbsp. soy sauce
2 1/2 Tbsp. water

In a large bowl, blend cornstarch, garlic, 1 teaspoon ginger, and 2 tablespoons vegetable oil until cornstarch is dissolved. Mix in broccoli, snow peas, carrots, and green beans, tossing to lightly coat.

The concept of a Daniel fast comes from Daniel 1:8-14, “But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way. Now God had caused the official to show favor and sympathy to Daniel, but the official told Daniel, ‘I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.’
Daniel then said to the guard whom the chief official had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, ‘Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.’ So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days.”
The background of the Daniel fast is that Daniel and his three friends had been deported to Babylon when Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians conquered Judah (2 Kings 24:13-14). Daniel and his three friends were put into the Babylonian court servant “training program.” Part of the program was learning Babylonian customs, beliefs, laws, and practices. The eating habits of the Babylonians were not in complete agreement with the Mosaic Law. As a result, Daniel asked if he and his three friends could be excused from eating the meat (which was likely sacrificed to Babylonian false gods and idols).
So, a Daniel fast is eating only fruits and vegetables for a certain amount of time and abstaining from meat products. Some people use a Daniel fast instead of fasting from food entirely.

How to Explain Fasting to Kids
An easy way to explain the benefits of prayer and fasting to kids is to compare it to cleaning out old toys that might no longer work, or that they might have outgrown, to make room for new ones. As we clean out our bodies and make time to connect closer to God and His Word, we make room to receive new gifts from Him.
Kids Fasting How-To’s
We do not recommend that children skip meals or drastically reduce their food intake, but a modification of their diet might prove to be an easy place to start. For example, fasting from specific items such as sweets, red meats, fried foods or even introducing a form of the Daniel fast which includes legumes, nuts and whole grains is a great way for children to participate in a safe and healthy way.*
Another great way to fast is by reducing some of the time and energy spent watching TV, playing video games, using the computer or phone, and instead choosing to spend time praying, reading their Bible or serving others.
Refer to our “Sample Fasting Calendar for Kids” as an additional resource for you and your kids during the fasting season.
The main thing is for kids to recognize the value behind setting aside special times to disconnect from some of the extra-curricular activities and treats they enjoy on a regular basis and learn how to connect to God in a closer way. Write down a few prayer requests and pray together for those things throughout the fast.
*Please note, you should always check with your child’s pediatrician before your child(ren) begin any type of fasting.
You may add your prayer request to our prayer wall using the form below. Once your prayer request is received, we will share it according to your instructions. Feel free to submit as many prayer requests as you like!

City Hills Church Family,
I request prayer for my Mother and her heart. She is currently at the UT Medical Heart Hospital, awaiting results for tightness in her chest and the functionality of her heart. She's been receiving care since Monday, 12/16/2024.
We are prayerful that the doctor's report will show that she can and will have a healthy heart, and that the treatment will not be too rigorous.
I know the God we serve will do what only He can do, and that he's a waymaker, miracle worker, promise keeper, and light in the darkness. He's a God of the impossible.
Our family asks for all the prayer warriors to lift us up, and call upon the name of the Lord, on my Mom's behalf.
Thank you.

I keep praying for my husband and our marriage daily with no change and no hope. I keep praying for his salvation. He says he believes in God but prays to a higher power. He watches and listens to demonic things. He can't even stand to stay a we whole church service. Theres no love, intimacy or affection in our marriage but he only cares if I get pregnant yet for the last 2 months he has slept on the couch. He says he's given up even though it's only been 6 months and we just one false positive and one miscarriage. He blames me for everything and is always angry at me. He will punish me and withholds affection even emotional support if he thinks I do the smallest thing wrong. Im sick of praying and seeing no change no love in him. I love him so much but God why can't there be restoration and deliverance! I have 2 boys of my own that are also being affected by this atmosphere. I'm so heartbroken all the time and I'm afraid I might have to leave. I'm scared, lonely and my heart is shattered. I can't take this anymore and either can my kids. I don't understand why I'm cursed or why my destiny is being caged or why God can't hear my prayers. But I feel like I'm begging and screaming for Him to hear me and save my husband, save our marriage and deliver all of us.

I have been unemployed from my job since August and I have been receiving unemployment benefits since August.
In the beginning when I received the benefits, I didn't know the process and unfortunately made some honest clerical errors. I probably will have to pay back some money, but I am believing God for favor and grace with this issue in the name of Jesus.

Recently, at work I was becoming really close with a guy as a friend and for awhile I felt like something was not right but I thought it was my anxiety so I went with it for the last month. Everything was fine and we were getting to know each other. But I was still feeling uncomfortable. I prayed for God to reveal to me why I was feeling that way and the next day my friends revealed to me that he was doing drugs for fun at parties. I am in a lot of shock and I know the Lord was definitely protecting me. Please keep me in your prayers. I'm dealing with a lot of anxiety when I see him and also a lot of spiritual tension. I'm trying to accept that it is best to let him go but it has been rough because we both still want to pursue a friendship and he actually wants to pursue more than that. Please pray for wisdom and peace. Pray that this relationship with dissolve and that if the Lord is willing, to please bring him back as a friend. Pray that the Lord's will be done in this situation. Please pray for my friend. He recently became a manager as well but is still attending those parties. I ask that God will reveal to him the dangers of his decision and that he will have strength to not pursue drugs. I pray for the right influences in his life and that God will renew his life. Thank you.

Please continue to pray for my daughter Valeria for physical, mental, and spiritual protection. Her mother doesn't allow her to pray, nor read the bible, nor attend church. She has wondered off from the path of the Lord. Thank you!

Please pray in agreement with me: Heavenly Father, we come before You, united in prayer for my friend. We ask that You free her from the tormenting voices that have been afflicting her. Silence these demonic voices and set her free from all satanic oppression and possession. Wash her in the precious blood of the Lamb, Jesus Christ, and deliver her from all spiritual darkness. Strengthen her faith and fill her with your holy spirit. Break every stronghold of the mind, Lord, and grant her complete peace, joy, protection and freedom in Jesus Christ Name. Grant salvation to her entire family. In Jesus Christ Name Amen

I am 80 years old I was already having problems on my legs & is not able to walk properly since many years. I have fallen on ground heavily & got seriously hurt on one of my leg. After that I am not able to move even an inch & is having heavy pain on various parts on one of my leg starting from my waist to toe. I’m not even being able to sit or move an inch on the bed even with others help & support. I’m now completely bed ridden. My condition is very serious & complicated. Kindly pray to the lord to bless & completely cure me out of this condition by performing miracles. Kindly pray so that nothing serious happens to me & also so that the problem on my leg gets completely cured as early as possible by its own. Kindly pray so that I could again stand on my feets & start movement as before. I’m also a patient of diabetes, high pressure, chronic kidney disease, etc. Also have brain functioning related problems due to age related factors & also due to a brain stroke which I had last year.Kindly pray for my overall well being.

That God would stop the house I live in from being sold. My stepsister is trying to manipulate my mother into selling her house which would be a bad thing for all. Stepsister is also driving without a license and it would be dangerous for her to care for mother. That God would have mercy stop house from being sold.

Please be in prayer for my City Hope mom!
She's currently at UT Hospital in preterm labor as of yesterday. She was carrying her sleeping son down a hill and slipped!
The baby seems okay, he's moving around with a good heartbeat. However, she's experiencing contractions and really bad hip pain. She's dilated 3 centimeters and has been admitted in order to monitor her progression. They have her on steroids just in case he comes early he'll be able to breathe on his own. Mama is very upset (understandable). She said "hoping maybe you could pray for me as far as if he decides he wants to come that he will be healthy and thrive and pray for me just go safe delivery when it comes time." (My heart goes out to her! )
Please pray with me for them. I trust Ephesians 3:20 - 21
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above ALL that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, 21 to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen!

I humbly and gratefully ask for your prayers. I am going through a difficult time, issues with family, financial, constant pain, everything is breaking in my home and I just can't keep up with it by myself. Depression. Loneliness. I have been so greatly blessed by my Heavenly Father in life my and do not often pray for myself but I am struggling. I know He hears my prayers, but please pray for my acceptance of His will when I do not see the help I ask for.
